Deer Ridge
The great course architect Alister MacKenzie was a master of disguise. Using camouflage techniques he picked up during the Boer War, MacKenzie had a knack for placing hazards and shaping landforms to mislead the golfer’s eye. Deer Ridge Golf Club in Brentwood isn’t a MacKenzie creation, but it carries on his legacy of illusion—even the scorecard can fool the unwitting.
As you know, your Deal Caddy runs a what-you-see-is-what-you-get operation. Today that’s 18 holes with cart and range balls at Deer Ridge, good Sunday through Friday before 11:00 a.m. Tee off after 11:00, and it’s all you can play. On Saturdays the deals are redeemable for 18 holes after 10:00 a.m.
Option 1, one golfer—$29, up to 55% off rack rates
Option 2, two golfers—$52 ($26 per person), up to 60% off
Option 3, four golfers—$92 ($23 per person), up to 65% off
Designer Andy Raugust employed some smooth sleight of hand to make Deer Ridge much tougher than a 6,302 yard layout appears. A veteran of Nicklaus Design and Schmidt-Curley, Raugust used the intricate patterns and ever-shifting shadows of Brentwood’s hills to cast doubt on the player’s depth perception. Many bunkers are set well back from targets, but they appear to present imminent danger. Be wary of these little tricks, and a nice score could be yours.
Deer Ridge displays wonderful variety from start to finish. It has tons of strategic value, too. For example, No. 15 seems like a whopper of a par 3 at 231 yards, but it plays downhill across a gentle pitch. Land the ball short, and watch it bound onto the green.
If you find Deer Ridge to be finely groomed and drop-dead gorgeous, your eyes don’t deceive. Real beauty, like honest value, is impossible to hide.
