Highlights

  • Water hazards animate holes like No. 5, a testy par 4, and No. 15, an intimidating par 3 of 196 yards.
  • The 6,586-yard Jack Clark Course is more forgiving off the tee and features a sterling rendition of the short par 4.

Details

Chuck Corica

First he helped save Alameda’s beloved Victorian homes. Then Chuck Corica made sure the city’s historic golf facility wasn’t converted into a parking lot or strip mall. The 45-hole complex now bears the late mayor’s name, a fitting tribute to the man’s passion in preserving our cherished places. The Deal Caddy invites you to play your heart out for 18 holes, cart included, on either Chuck Corica GC course (Earl Fry or Jack Clark), any time Monday through Friday and after 12:00 p.m. weekends/holidays until April 30. My rates:

One player—$28, up to 53% off retail pricing
Two players—$50 ($25 per person), up to 58% off
Four players—$80 ($20 per person), up to 67% off

After his 1973 triumph, which prevented those Victorians being replaced by condos, Corica intervened when the city considered selling the golf club’s southern flank. It’s a good thing he did. The golf complex features side-by-side designs from the legendary father-son duo of William P. and William F. Bell, a rare double indeed. The elder Bell laid out the Earl Fry 18 in 1929, and its shotmaking demands remain strong. Water hazards animate holes like No. 5, a testy par 4, and No. 15, a nerve-racking par 3 of 196 yards. Earl Fry isn’t overly strenuous at 6,339 yards, but its nuances provide plenty to chew on.

William F. Bell added his contribution in 1957. The 6,586-yard Jack Clark Course is more forgiving off the tee, though the back nine tightens up in spots. My favorite hole would have to be No. 8, a memorable rendering of the short, strategic par 4, while the 413-yard 18th makes a terrific finale.

Whichever course you choose, take a moment to remember the facility’s patron saint. Thanks to Chuck Corica, Alameda residents still have a great club to call home.
