Rio Salado
As much as well all love to play, let’s be honest: sometimes golf just wears you out. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it work, but round after round on punishing, 7,000-yard tracks can wreak havoc on swing and psyche (not to mention the bank balance). What you need is a mini-break, and I’ve found the perfect refresher course in Tempe. It’s called AllGolf at Rio Salado, where I want you to rest the nerves and wallet by playing 18 holes with cart for $9. That’s right, 50¢ per hole, 47% off regular rates, good any time, any day through September 30.
Rio Salado gives off a laid-back vibe that beginners and father-son (or daughter) combos warm to immediately. Don’t worry; competitive players are welcome too; just check your more serious side at the first tee. But that’s kind of the point. The facility’s nine-hole loop makes for a fun, relaxing 18 when toured twice, and you’ll switch tees the second time around to keep things interesting. Over 18 holes you’ll play nine par 4s, seven par 3s and a pair of par 5s, for a total par of 67 at a shade under 5,000 yards from the back tees. While the fairways are graciously wide, 15 bunkers will inflict a little pain if you let your guard down.
Then again, that’s what you’re supposed to do at Rio Salado. So don’t fret if you fail to post a sub-par score. I say grab the wife, the kids, a date or an office chum, and enjoy a breather. Your psyche and your finances will be better for it.
