Desert Falls
Life is tough for a golfer in Palm Desert. Yes, really. With so many courses stacked end to end, top to bottom, how the heck do you decide where to tee it up on any given day? For that matter, how do you distinguish one course from another?Naturally, your Deal Caddy has gift-wrapped the answers into a single offer.
The destination is Desert Falls Country Club, a uniquely memorable layout, where you can play two 18-hole rounds with cart in November for just $150 (31% off rack rates), or December for just $140 (36% off). Whichever month you choose, the deal is valid any time Sunday through Thursday, excluding holidays, provided you redeem your rounds on separate days.
Good as this deal is, I wish I could dish out more than two rounds at a time—you could play Desert Falls over and over and never get bored. That speaks volumes for Ron Fream’s artful design, a spectacle of eye-pleasing shapes and slyly turned angles. It starts with the fairways, which roll along in links-style waves between rows of palms. Fream’s amorphous bunkers have a major say in course strategy, especially on the front nine. Then there are the greens. The hammock-like seventh is my personal favorite, and the double green serving holes nine and 18 is super cool, but No. 14 gets the most publicity—probably because it’s 18,000 square feet and forms a modified “Y,” creating a mind-bending three-in-one combo target.
Desert Falls earns four stars from Golf Digest, ranks among the state’s top 10 desert tracks by the SCPGA and is a truly fair test for everyone. Best of all the course is full of unforgettable touches that lift it above the crowd. Around these parts that’s a pretty impressive feat.
