Highlights

  • David Rainville, a Tustin-based architect whose golf fingerprints are all over Southern California, peppered the 5,218-yard, par 70 layout with plenty of spice—witness the 122 Slope rating, higher than many full-length tracks.
  • Your driver may feel like a stranger by round’s end, as the course’s narrow fairways are fortified by bunkers, trees and creeks.

Wanna drive your Deal Caddy bonkers? Dangle two choices under my nose—one featuring unlimited golf, the other a sleeve of balls and future savings. My remaining hair might pull itself out over that one. Thank goodness the choice is yours, not mine. And if the decision is too tough, you can always buy both deals, valid at California Oaks GC until April 30:

Option 1 (weekdays only)—$29 for unlimited golf with cart and lunch on any weekday, plus a one-hour clinic with a PGA teaching professional. That’s a staggering discount of up to 71% off retail rates.

Option 2 (weekends only)—$35 for 18 holes with cart, three brand-name golf balls and a 2-for-1 green fee for a return visit, saving you up to 65%.

That’s big-time bang for your buck, but such largesse comes with the territory at California Oaks. Despite measuring just 5,218 yards, this par 70 track boasts a 122 Slope Rating® that reflects its many challenges. Tustin-based architect David Rainville employed an arsenal of hazards, including water on nine holes and more than 40 bunkers, to ratchet up the difficulty. Quick tip: Think twice before reaching for the driver.

It takes more than thread-the-needle accuracy to conquer California Oaks. Attention to strategic detail is crucial. For example, certain holes invite an aggressive attack—like No. 6, a wide-open, 328-yard par 4—while a hole like the tricky seventh is best handled with kid gloves. That goes double for the greens, steeply pitched little parcels designed to try your touch.

The quick pace of play at California Oaks makes it an ideal venue for unlimited golf, with lunch between rounds. Then again, you might want those free balls in case of emergency. Personally, I’d pit the clinic vs. the 2-for-1 voucher as a tiebreaker. Then I’d start looking for a good hair transplant surgeon.
