Branch River

There are a couple of characters I’ve vowed not to become in my golden years: 1) The guy who grumbles non-stop about taxes; and 2) The one who starts every other sentence with, Back in my day. Sadly, I myself struggle with stereotype No. 2, aka “Mr. Yesteryear.” He pops up whenever I visit a place like The Golf Club at Branch River, murmuring something like “they don’t make ’em like they used to.”

Pining for some old-school golf? Enjoy 18 timeless holes at The GC at Branch River, with cart and range balls, for the throwback price of just $30, valid any time from opening day to May 31. While saving up to 43% vs. retail, you’ll also receive a coupon good for 20% off your next round.

Anyone who values a classic test of shotmaking, accuracy and course management will love Branch River. Formerly called Lakeside Country Club, it was built in 1956 by architect Bill Diddel. (Ironic side note: He’s credited with encouraging a young Pete Dye to kick convention to the curb.) The acreage is softly sloped, never severe, and Diddel was content to leave it that way. He figured the dense clots of mature trees lining each hole would provide ample challenge.

He figured right. Branch River tips out at 6,696 yards, but the slender fairways create a sense of considerable length. Mindlessly pull the driver, and you’ll court trouble. There are several spots where aggression might—repeat, might—pay off, like the short par 4 second hole and the 12th. Usually the wise play is to get it on the short grass to have a better go at Branch River’s quick, deceptive greens.

While the clubhouse is loaded with modern amenities, I still think of Branch River as a welcome reminder of golf’s past. “Mr. Yesteryear” must agree—I can’t drag him away from the place.
