Royal American Links
Fusing elements from two different cultures can be tricky business. If you’ve ever sampled barbecued foie gras, you know what I mean. So I’m always a little skeptical when I see the “links” tag affixed to an American course that promises a Scotland-esque experience. Well, leave it to Columbus’ own Dr. Michael Hurdzan, course designer extraordinaire, to pull off this delicate balancing act. Royal American Links showcases the best of both golf worlds, and your Deal Caddy doffs his cap by offering 18 holes with cart, valid any time Monday - Friday or after 11am on the weekends through May 24, at these amazing rates:
One player—$24, up to 47% off regular fees
Two players—$42 ($21 per person), up to 53% off
Four players—$76 ($19 per person), 58% off
Royal American Links lies northeast of Columbus in Galena—a long way from St. Andrews, for sure. No problem. Hurdzan imported key ingredients such as broad, bounding fairways, sinister pot bunkers and bounce-it-on greens to give the course a tangible Scottish flair. He didn’t forget his own roots either. All-American touches include a half-dozen ponds and a seriously slick collection of bentgrass greens.
Golfers of all skill levels rave about Royal American. The layout beautifully blends appetizing birdie holes with tough-as-nails punishers. How’s this for balance? From the 6,859-yard back tees, you’ll face five par 4s of less than 364 yards and five measuring 414-plus. The par 3s and 5s are equally diverse, with the 190-yard 12th—an intimidating one-shotter over water, rock and sand—deserving of its signature status.
Royal American carries out its theme with links-inspired hole names (“Hidden Sisters,” “Collection Plate”) and a Scottish castle-style clubhouse. This being the U.S., however, that clubhouse houses 18,000 square feet of luxurious amenities, including the highly recommended Grille Room. No BBQ’d foie gras, just classic après-golf cuisine. Now that’s what I call home cookin’
