Shadow Glen Golf Club
Like everyone else, I sometimes take issue with opinions from “the media.” (I hold special contempt for People Magazine, which has yet to crown your Deal Caddy “Sexiest Man Alive.” I’m still hoping they’ll start a senior division.) I have only a tiny beef with Golf Digest’s proclamation that Shadow Glen Golf Club “offers a little bit of everything.” It’s more accurate to say Shadow Glen offers a whole lot of challenge, scenery, fun and value—especially when your twosome antes up for 18 holes with cart, range balls and lunch for each golfer at these rates:
$50 ($25 per person) to play any time Monday through Friday, a 47% discount to regular prices
$75 ($37.50 per person) to play any time Saturday or Sunday, a 42% discount
You have until March 8 to redeem this offer, and I see no reason to wait. As we speak, the course sports a lovely coat of winter rye and some of the best greens around. The layout is a winner no matter when you play. Shadow Glen was designed by Austin-based architects Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell, whose local knowledge paid off big-time. Golf Digest named it one of America’s “10 Best New Affordable Public Courses” in 2004. Hate to quibble, but I think it should’ve ranked higher.
Shadow Glen spreads links-styling over rippling terrain, and there’s always something new around the next bend. You’ll blast a few drives into wide-open spaces, then the course will dip into the woods and say, “Hit it here—or else.” The turbulent greens will keep you guessing, too.
Courses don’t come much tougher than Shadow Glen from the tips—7,174 yards is a whole lot of golf. You got that, Golf Digest? I know, I know. They were being complimentary with that “little bit of everything” line. It’s just that such a pat description can’t capture such abundance of character.
